SHARING MY LOVE OF BOOKS

Welcome to the books page at Kevin's Portal.

On This Page:

INTRODUCTION

It's fair to say that books are one of my passions. I love books and have quite a large library. This page will continue to grow and will reflect that passion in the weeks and months ahead.

AT THE BOOKSHELF

I maintain a blog called At the Bookshelf which I am beginning to use more and more. The blog features include book reviews, links to books online, articles about books and web applications relevant to books. I am always looking at ways to further the use of the blog.

The feed for At the Bookshelf can be found in the column at right.

Visit the site at:

MY WEBSITE LIBRARIES

On the websites that I maintain I have some website libraries. These libraries are generally link libraries - that is, they are libraries of links to books. I did host a lot of books on the sites, but these are being reworked to allow them to be available via Scribd, so not many of these are currently available. When the Scribd books are ready they will be embedded into the various libraries.

Visit my various website libraries via the links below:

RELEVANT WEB APPLICATIONS AND SITES

As you would expect I do have a presence at a number of book related social networks, web applications and websites. These are listed below.

  • Amazon.com

I have included Amazon.com here because it is the world's largest bookshop and I have an account here.

  • Any New Books?

This service sends out a newsletter notifying you of new books released in the categories you have specified.

  • BookCrossing

BookCrossing is a social network for sharing, finding and discussing books. It is a very unique experience being with BookCrossing.

  • Christianaudio.com

This is a site that sells Christians books in audio format.

  • Christian Classics Ethereal Library (CCEL)

This is really a Christian book website - it is included here because I have an account with the site.

  • Citebite

Citebite allows you to copy and paste a quote into a form, along with the URL of the source and then provides you with a link to the highlighted quote in the source page.

  • DailyLit

DailyLit is a service that sends you books via email in installments that you can manage and as regularly as you set in the settings. A very useful service.

  • Diigo

Diigo is a research bookmarking tool. With it you can bookmark, highlight, take notes and screenshots, access anywhere and share. A great tool.

  • Evernote

Evernote is one of my favorite web applications/pieces of software. It is an application for remembering things and note taking. It is a very useful tool for book reading, etc.

  • Goodreads

Goodreads is a social network for booklovers. There are widgets for my Goodreads books in the column at right.

    - The Particular Baptist Reading Group

The Particular Baptist Reading Group is a group that reads reformed classics, delivered chapter by chapter, week by week - one chapter a week.

  • Google Books

Google Books is a great place to find out of print books. Highly recommended. I use this a lot.

  • Memverse

This service is for memorizing Scripture.

  • Scribd

Scribd is a social network for sharing documents online, including books.

  • Scrible

I don't actually use this site because I use Diigo, but it looks quite impressive also. This tool allows you to save websites, annotate them, organise them and access them anywhere from the cloud.

  • Word

This is a Christian bookshop that I have an account with.

  • WordNik

WordNik is a vocabulary site that is all about words. You can set up an email service that sends you an email a day about a word.

I also maintain a private blog on wordpress.com called My Private Quotes, which is simply a way for saving quotes from books (by way of posts to the blog), which are then also searchable. A very useful way to keep quotes in the cloud for private use.

KEVIN'S LIBRARY

I have been slowly placing a catalogue of my own library up on my website. I'm not sure if I will continue with this as I now use Shelfari and Goodreads (social networks mentioned above) for the same purpose.
